Take a Position

Read "Consider the Source: Becoming a Savvy Media Consumer" in this chapter.

Take a position: Is the media adequately informing the public?

As you develop your argument, answer the following questions:

  • What are the main stories you generally see on the front page of the newspaper? On cable news? On local news?
  • What is the focus of these stories? Are they negative in tone? What kinds of people are used as sources? Are the people interviewed putting a spin on the story, or are they providing objective analysis?
  • Do you see evidence of bias in the stories?
  • After you've read an article or watched a television segment, do you have unanswered questions? Would other information have been helpful in the article or segment?
